3 Days in Singapore

How to make the most of 3 days in Singapore

The island city-state of Singapore, located off the southern end of Malaysia, is a diverse melting pot of cultures and races giving the country a unique character. Once a sleepy fishing village, Singapore is now home to around 5.4 million people and a hive of activity with a broad number of industries including finance, tourism, trade and electronics.

Where to Stay

Due to the relatively small size of Singapore and their amazing rail system, you can pretty much stay anywhere in the city as getting around is so easy and cost-effective.   Some of the more popular areas include Clarke Quay, Robertson Quay, Orchard, Bencoolen, Sentosa Island and more recently Marina Bay Sands.

Insider Tip: If you’re looking for great value the Ibis Bencoolen offers you a good location (within walking distance to both Orchard Road and Bugis Junction for those looking to shop), the MRT is close by, walking distance to Raffles Hotel plus hotel guests receive a mobile phone with unlimited data usage!

Getting Around

The very first thing you must do when you arrive in Singapore is to get your hands on an MRT Singapore Tourist Pass. The pass can be bought at the TransitLink Ticket Office at the following MRT stations: Changi Airport,Orchard, Chinatown, City Hall, Raffles Place, Ang Mo Kio, HarbourFront, Bugis, Lavender and Bayfront.

The rail network in Singapore is fantastic making getting around easy, fast and very cost-effective. The MRT system is easy to navigate with a simple East – West and North – South network. You can view the network map here.

What to do & see

As with any city visit, it pays to pre-plan your daily activities so you can group things together to lessen travel time and reduce any back tracking.

Singapore doesn’t really get going until 10 – 11am so there is no need to be an early starter unless you plan to do a specific experience that requires you to get there early such as the Jungle Breakfast at Singapore Zoo.

There is so much to do on the small island of Singapore so we have pulled together some of our favourite options for this 3-day suggested itinerary.

Day 1 in Singapore

Start your morning with a stroll along Clarke Quay to Robertson Quay where you can enjoy a delicious breakfast at one of the many cafes located along the waterway. Once you’ve had your caffeine hit and satisfied your appetite you can either walk (20 – 30 mins) to Orchard Road or jump in a taxi for the 5 minute drive to Orchard Road. This famous shopping precinct is around 2.2 kilometres long and is quite a pleasant walk with many large shopping centres and Department stores to tempt you. Find out more about Orchard Road here

Insider Tip: Singapore is consistently warm so you will want to head back to your room to freshen up before you step out for the evening.

Time for dinner! China Town is an absolute must do when in Singapore. It is a bustling mix of old and new, filled with traditional shops and markets as well as cool stores and cafes. If you’re looking for delicious food at bargain prices you are going to love China town! If you prefer something a little more western there is an array of quirky bars & restaurants in this area including some great little roof top bars such as the Screening Room. If you’d like to step it up a little and experience a more sophisticated Singapore, make your way to 1-Altitude rooftop bar that stands at 282 metres high with a 360-degree view of Singapore.

Insider Tip: Alcohol is quite expensive in Singapore so be sure to allow for this in your budget.

Day 2 in Singapore

Take the MRT to the awe-inspiring 101 hectares of green space, Gardens by the Bay. Comprised of three waterfront gardens, the Flowerdome, Cloud Forest, Skyway and Supertree Grove this award winning attraction offers self-guided trails and frequently changing displays that will leave you breathless. The outdoor gardens are open from 5am – 2am daily and the Flowerdome and Cloud Forest Conservatories are open daily from 9am – 9pm and entry costs S$28 for adults and S$15 for children aged 3 – 12 years. The OCBC Skyway is open 9am – 9pm and costs S$8 per adult and S$5 per child aged 3 -12 years.

You can lose a day exploring this magical space however we highly recommend making your way across the walkway to Marina Bay Sands. This luxury Hotel complex offers shopping, entertainment, a Casino, restaurants and a Museum plus you can take the lift to the rooftop and experience the best view in Singapore overlooking the city.

Insider Tip: You can book tickets for the Sands Skypark Observation Deck or take the hotel lift 57 stories high to the rooftop bar area where you will find Flight Bar & Lounge and Ce’ La Vi Restaurant and SkyBar.

Day 3 in Singapore

Boasting an abundance of activities that will keep everyone happy, make your way to the island of Sentosa. Choose from Universal Studios, S.E.A Aquarium, the cable car, Zipline, Luge rides and more… or put your feet up as you soak up some sun and enjoy a cool cocktail at one of the beach bars dotted along the beach areas of Siloso Beach, Palawan Beach and Tanjong Beach.

Insider Tip: We recommend you look at the various Attraction Passes as these may turn out more cost effective for you.

Flying time to Singapore

Singapore can be the perfect stopover on your way to or from Europe or a destination in its own right.   The flight time from Perth to Singapore is just over 5 hours and from the East Coast (Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne) is around 8 hours .

Airlines flying to Singapore

There are numerous carriers that include Singapore on their network however for those who choose Singapore as their final destination, you are most likely going to be flying Singapore Airlines, Qantas or low cost carrier, Scoot.

If you’d like to know more about how to spend your time in Singapore, contact one of our Travel Partners on 1300 456 109 or complete an online enquiry form.

Is your Credit Card Travel Insurance Enough?

Travel Insurance

There’s never been a better time to travel… but don’t forget your Travel Insurance! With a myriad of options available covering all types of holidays and budgets, we are seeing more people travel more often. What was once a luxury that only very few could afford is now pretty much an everyday (every year) occurrence and generally accepted as being the norm.

With an increase in competition in all facets of travel experiences, consumers are the winners as a plethora of travel deals hit the market daily. While travellers can save hundreds of dollars on some of these travel deals the travel deals can come with strict terms and conditions. These can include cancellation fees, of which some can be as high as 100%, as well as various change fees.

The strict cancellation and amendment fees combined with the potential risk of lost luggage, high medical costs incurred if hospitalised overseas and other unforeseen circumstances make the need for Travel Insurance imperative.

The challenge is making sure you choose the right travel insurance and level of coverage for your particular situation. Most credit cards will offer some level of travel insurance however it is best to take the time to read exactly what you are covered for and compare it to other travel insurance products available.

Credit Cart Travel Insurance Checklist

Here’s our checklist:

  • Is there an activation amount required (how much of the trip must be paid for on the card) before the coverage kicks in?
  • What is the maximum amount of time you will be covered for and is this sufficient for your trip?
  • Is there an age limit on the policy?
  • Do you have an existing medical condition and if so, will the policy cover you? If so what are you covered for and for what limits?
  • Are you covered for hire car excess?
  • Is there a 24-hour emergency number to call?
  • Make sure you have a copy of the policy and are 100% clear on what you are covered for

Once you’ve completed the checklist you will be much more informed about what you’re covered for, who is covered and what assistance you will have should anything happen during your travels and you can now make the decisions on whether or not your credit card travel insurance is sufficient or if you need to purchase a separate policy.

Benefits of cruising

With a forecasted 24 million people worldwide opting for cruise holidays by 2020, cruising continues to prove extremely popular for singles, families and groups of friends.

Our Top Five benefits of Cruising

Choice of cruise options

A cruise holiday provides a range of options to choose from including expedition style cruising, river cruising and ocean cruising along with various styles and sizes of ships from smaller more intimate ships right through to mega ships such as Royal Caribbean’s Allure of the Seas and Oasis of the Seas.

Ease of cruise holidays

Cruise holidays make it easy for those travellers who prefer to have most of their holiday included in the one itinerary and price. Depending upon where you are cruising, sometimes it means you can even board the ship from your hometown, making it perfect for those who love to travel but prefer not to fly.  When a cruise trip is booked, travellers can rest easy knowing no further calls have to be made, except to decide on where to dine and which shore excursions to book.

Value of cruise holidays

Cruises have proven to be one of the most economical ways to holiday. A lot of travellers love the idea of knowing up front just how much the majority of their holiday is going to cost as cruise holidays typically include meals, entertainment, accommodation and sometimes bonus on-board credit. The choice of cabin styles from 6 berth below deck to outside cabins with a balcony ensure that there is something for everyone.

Entertainment on cruise ships

You will never get bored on a cruise ship. It is commonly known and now expected that cruise ship entertainment is second to none. Cruise lines offer nightly entertainment including poolside bands, dinner theatre, piano bar acts, comedy and musical revues plus most of the bigger cruise ships have multiple dining options and an on-board casino. The variety and quality of on-board entertainment offered by cruise ships certainly contributes to the value offered by a cruise holiday and is also why so many people become avid cruisers.

Visit multiple destinations when cruising

The ability to visit not just one but multiple ports & countries during a cruise makes a cruise holiday ideal for many people. No other holiday offers a traveller this and the convenience of only unpacking once. The ship becomes your mode of transportation with no need to hire a car and navigate your way around foreign lands. Cruising is the perfect holiday solution for those wanting to just, well, cruise!

The rise in popularity of cruising for Australians has seen more ships in our waters. This combined with the rise in competition around the world amongst the cruise lines means Australians can secure some amazing cruise deals.

To find out about the latest cruise deals available, contact Travel Partners online or call us today on 1300 456 109.

Ever thought of celebrating overseas?

Celebrate

Over recent years the Travel Partners team has seen a significant increase in celebrations being held overseas. From weddings to milestone birthdays, Australians are looking for alternative experiences to celebrate special occasions.

Destination Weddings

Historically, eloping was seen as a great way to get married without the costs of a traditional wedding and generally it was just the two of you! However, over the last decade we have seen many couples choosing to tie the knot, both with and without family and friends, overseas at exotic destinations.

Places like Thailand, Fiji and Bali have proven extremely popular especially as these destinations offer all styles of weddings catering to all budgets.

Popular Wedding venues include:

Fiji

  • Sheraton Fiji Resort
  • InterContinental Fiji Golf Resort & Spa
  • Outrigger Fiji Beach Resort

Bali

  • Semara Luxury Villas
  • Bulgari Hotels & Resorts Bali
  • AYANA Resort & Spa Bali

Thailand

  • Cape Sienna Phuket
  • Pullman Khao Lak Katiliya Resort & Spa Hotel
  • Phi Phi Island Village

We’re also seeing an increase in demand for Sri Lanka, the Maldives and coastal areas of Europe.

Milestone Birthdays & Special Occasions

The celebration of milestone birthdays such as 40ths and 50ths has turned into a great excuse to gather up your friends for an overseas celebration. Travel Partner clients are also looking to celebrate babymoons and anniversaries overseas.

Las Vegas and New York continue to top the list as the most popular destinations for birthday celebrations. Las Vegas tends to attract groups of 10 or more guys and gals whereas we are seeing a number of girls trips booked for the Big Apple, New York.

Las Vegas

With its enviable shopping, 24-hour world-class casinos & entertainment and in more recent years a selection of superior dining experiences, Las Vegas continues to reinvent itself providing travellers ample reasons to visits. Resorts such as Aria and The Cosmopolitan have injected a more modern offering while the stylish classics of Caesars Palace and The Bellagio continue to deliver a sophisticated Vegas stay.

New York

Home to some of the world’s most iconic sites, such as the Empire State Building, Times Square, Statue of Liberty, Central Park and the Rockefeller Centre, New York with its 5 boroughs wears many crowns.

Today we have clients looking to go beyond the iconic sites and seek new experiences in the outer boroughs of Brooklyn, Queens, Staten Island and Harlem. Australians are also keen to soak up the Manhattan streets of popular neighbourhoods such as Chelsea, Soho, TriBeca and Greenwich. Today, its not only about seeing the famous landmarks of NYC, its about finding your unique experience in the city that never sleeps.

Not sure where to go?  Call your Travel Partners expert on 1300 456 109 or complete an online booking form and we’ll talk you through options that will deliver you a memorable overseas celebration.

Soak Up Napa Valley

NapaValley

Located approximately 1.5 hours north of San Francisco, the Napa Valley has established itself as the premier wine destination of North America. It boasts charming resorts, some of the best urban chefs and with its gorgeous Mediterranean climate, it is the perfect destination or add-on to any USA holiday.

Where to stay

The Napa Valley is made up of small towns including American Canyon, Fairfield, Yountville, St Helena, Rutherford, Oakville and Calistoga. Our recommendation is to look at downtown Napa if you’re looking for a less expensive place to stay yet still have a great choice of restaurants. If you are a real foodie and want to be able to dine out at some of the famous Napa Valley restaurants including French Laundry or Bouchon, we suggest looking at Yountville although accommodation is a little more pricey here! Calistoga located at the northern tip of Napa Valley has been made famous for their mud baths. St Helena and Rutherford offer hotels that are destinations in themselves, such as Auberge du Soleil and Meadowood, and will require deep pockets… but worth it.

Napa Valley Winery Experiences

With over 400 wineries in this 2000 km2 area, of which 95% are family-owned, there is plenty of wine tasting to be done. The Napa Valley offers 5 types of tasting experiences:

  • Barrel Tasting: This unique experience allows you sample a wine in the middle of its development as a siphon is placed into a barrel to extract the wine.
  • Walk Around Tasting: A great option to keep you moving and enables you to see different areas of a winery as your guide will move you around the winery for different tastings and settings.
  • Table Service Tasting: As the name suggests, you are seated at a table for these tastings where they are brought to you. They are popular at sparkling wine wineries.
  • Sit Down Tasting: A sit down tasting is perfect for the wine connoisseur who looking to not only taste the wines but to also learn more about them as your host describes and explains the unique characteristics of each wine. Typically a sit down tasting will require you to make an appointment with the winery.
  • Wine Bar Tasting: Most Australians would have experienced a wine bar tasting if they have visited the Barossa Valley, Hunter Valley or Margaret River. It is widely offered and gives guests the opportunity to choose tastings from a list of wines available from that particular winery. A tasting fee is charged for each wine selected with prices ranging from US$10 – US$40 (or more!).

Due to the small size of some of the wineries, it is advisable to make an appointment if you can. Also, some wineries have permit restrictions that limit the number of visitors each day and others have sit-down tastings with specific start and finish times.

Best time to visit Napa

With a year round daytime temperature of 21 degrees celcius (70 degress Fahrenheit), you really can travel any time of year however our top tip is to travel between September to November as the Summer season can be quite hectic.

Getting to Napa

Most Australians are likely to fly into San Francisco or even drive up Highway 1 from Los Angeles to San Francisco and from there it is around a 85km (60 mile) drive to Napa Valley and generally will take 1.5 hours driving time.

Getting around Napa

The Napa Valley is promoting Car Free Napa as nearly 40% of California’s green house emissions come from transportation. It is likely that you will have a hire car however once you arrive in the Napa Valley, you can choose some local modes of transport including the Vine bus, Calistogia Shuttle, St Helena Shuttle and the Yountville Trolley. You may even prefer to hire a bicycle or do it in style with a luxury limousine.

If you’d like to find out more about the Napa Valley including the latest travel deals, contact Travel Partners today on 1300 456 109 or complete an online enquiry form.
